Herman Brood

Herman Brood (Zwolle, 1946) was a Dutch singer, painter, actor and author. One of a kind. A living proof of the sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll lifestyle. He embarked on a music career at the age of 17. In the eighties and nineties Brood shifted his artistic production to visual art, working on poems, paintings and screenprints. He worked in large format and with bright colors, his work was in the tradition of the Cobra.
Brood worked diligently with brushes, paint and spray cans and takes us on hallucinatory adventures. His work speaks of an enormous drive that, thanks to his perfect mastery of technology, he managed to translate in form and color in a brilliant way. The choice for primary colors came largely from necessity; he was color blind. He often applied letters to his work with black paint: the signature ‘Brood’ often forms a striking part of the painting.
