Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016.
Malick Sidibé’s work is first known for his reportage photographs, taken at surprise parties organized by young people fond of music and freedom while the country was preparing for independence. In 1962, he opened the “Studio Malick” in Bamako. The portraits taken in the studio would constitute the majority of his work. People came from everywhere to have their portraits taken by the eye of Bamako…
Noticed at the first Rencontres de la Photographie in Bamako, he exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and then in major galleries and museums around the world. He received the Hasselblad Prize in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
