Hans HARTUNG (Leipzig 1904 - Antibes 1989)

Hans Hartung was a French painter and graphic artist of German origin. From the 45s, Hartung took part in various exhibitions and his work was positively appreciated by art critics. The film director Alain Resnais made a film about him, which in 1948 in Germany and in 1950 was shot in Paris. From 1949 and after a long break from painting, Hartung had many solo exhibitions and became acquainted with the painters G_rard Schneider, Pierre Soulages, Georges Mathieu, Willi Baumeister and Mark Rothko. He quickly became one of the most important representatives of Informal painting. In 1952 Hartung and Anna-Eva Bergman had met again at a retrospective of Gonz_lez and they lived together since his divorce from Roberta Gonz_lez from 1953. They married for the second time in 1957. Hartung was elected member of the Berlin Akademie der Künste in 1956 and was invited three times to the documenta in Kassel: 1 (1955), II (1959) and III (1964). In 1957 he received the Rubenspreis der Stadt Siegen in Siegen and in 1960 he was awarded the painting prize at the Binnale of Venice. During the years 1962 and 1963 his work was shown in retrospective exhibitions in Z_rich, Vienna, Duesseldorf, Amsterdam and Brussels. Hartung was elected to the Acad_mie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in 1977 and the Mus_e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris organized a retrospective exhibition of his complete oeuvre of etchings and lithographs in 1980. In that year the French Post issued a stamp with an image of a painting by Hartung. Hartung's work is classified in the Nouvelle école de Paris.
