“I have always drawn. It's an essential part of my being”
Kati Laforce’s work includes drawings in various materials and paintings in acrylic. Since 2000, she has also been a teacher at SASK Deinze, Belgium.
Artyish asked her a few questions.
How did you get into this sector?
KL: As a child I loved drawing and making up stories. Originally I wanted to become a veterinarian or a biologist, but in secondary school it became clear that my talents lay more in drawing and painting. That's why I went to higher art education. I have a master's degree in liberal arts with a “free graphics” option. I now teach at KADE Beeld (Deinze).
Who or what inspired you to start drawing and painting?
KL: I have always drawn. It's an essential part of my being.
How would you describe your creative process?
KL: Everything starts with observing, recording images, but also with thoughts and feelings. In doing so, I start from my immediate environment or from current events. I take a lot of photos and I try everything in my sketchbooks. Sometimes a sketch becomes the start of a drawing or a painting, sometimes I start directly on a canvas. I know where to start when creating an image, but then I let the image take me, and I let coincidences and associations happen. Or as the poet Roberto Juarroz put it: “Seeking one thing is always finding another.”
Which artists have inspired you the most?
KL: I have been inspired and touched by many artists! If I had to pick a few it would be Pierre Bonnard, Raoul De Keyser, Thierry De Cordier, Louise Bourgeois and Mark Manders.
What have been your highlights so far (exhibitions, reviews...)?
KL: My work was exhibited at Buy Local I, Kunsthal, in Ghent (17/07–13/08/2020) as well as during its second edition (02/07 – 29/08/2021). From October 31st, 2020, to May 2nd, 2021, I was part of the exhibition Drawing in Lockdown in SMAK Ghent. My work was also featured at Belgicart (2/07 – 5/09/2021), Iceberg Foundation, Damme.
